After 36 hours in transit we’d finally arrived in Yangon. The combination of expensive xmas flights and a rescheduled Tiger plane saw us spending a night camped out on the Darwin airport floor, having lunch in Singapore and dinner in Bangkok before finally arriving in Myanmar.
An hour spent bouncing across the dark streets of Yangon and we finally checked into the hostel and promptly crashed onto our bed. Four short hours later and we were back up again heading off in the dark to find the bus station that should get us off to our next destination – Ngwe Saung – a sleepy little beach resort on the Andaman Sea. The original plan wasn’t meant to be this hectic but we can thank Tiger for keeping us on the move!
Five hours on slow, windy roads later the bus with no opening windows and crappy air-con smelt strongly of vomit – we probably should have taken more notice when the conductor handed out little plastic bags to the local passengers.. it seems the Burmese are somewhat susceptible to car/bus sickness.
That aside, arriving at Ngwe Saung we were greeted with a long uninterrupted beach front that was notably uncrowded and underdeveloped. Despite being the middle of high season most resorts appeared almost completely empty and so we happily spent the next few days unwinding and relaxing by the sea.
Heading back to Yangon, 6 hours on another vomit bus, we’re hoping to get ourselves onto an overnight bus to Bagan. Yes.. again it would’ve made sense to spend some actual time in Yangon but time is short!
